SITUATION

A pharmaceutical company was experiencing slow and erratic response time with their enterprise quality management application — critical for both quality control and compliance requirements. It’s a complex system that involves multiple sites, multiple instances of the application, as well as integration with several databases.

7000 users affected.

Company staff had continual performance issues using the application, which was beginning to interfere with performing pivotal recording and reporting tasks across the entire enterprise. Complaints soared, productivity suffered.

But when the company investigated the situation internally, the teams reported that the various elements and resources involved appeared to be working adequately. The company was also reluctant to make huge investments in application or infrastructure upgrades with no assurance of success.

They called in Axians.

SOLUTIONS

A holistic, 360-degree Evaluation by Specialists

Axians assembled a specialist team to uncover the root causes for the poor application performance and to detail the fixes for rectifying the situation.

The Axians team included a principal engineer and project managers, as well as specialists in each of the components that could possibly hamper the performance of the application:  experts in desktop environments, network communications, database management, as well as a specialist with deep experience in the QMS tracking application itself.

The team ran through a testing protocol that examined each of the elements involved, as well as interaction between the various network, database, hardware, and application components.

Navigating in a Regulated Environment

Due to the strict compliance rules Axians performed the testing and troubleshooting under mandatory change control procedures.

At the same time, the Axians team was keenly sensitive to the potential ‘turf’ and political issues within the IT organization. They were able to garner cooperation and support from all stakeholders.

Faults Uncovered, Fixes Defined

After methodical testing, Axians discovered that the slow performance resulted from a number of relatively small problems that compounded across the infrastructure.

As it turned out, most issues could be resolved with a series of careful optimizations of the application configuration, and fine-tuning several elements of the overall networking and database systems.

Axians compiled a detailed report on the causes, as well as the needed optimizations and adjustments.

RESULTS

They received a clear blueprint for improving the performance and user productivity.

Client was assured that no wholesale upgrades to the application, databases or infrastructure investment was needed.

No impact on compliance and security during the troubleshooting.
